Why Cats and Dogs Need Exercise

Obesity in cats and dogs is a serious problem these days. Indeed, it is estimated that one in three pets in the UK is overweight or obese. Fortunately, responsible owners can do something about this by ensuring their animals get plenty of regular exercise.

Exercise for Dogs
If a dog isn’t used to a daily walk then his owner should start by taking him out for short walks around the block as this will help him to get used to some gentle exercise. Naturally, these distances can be gradually increased over time. Playing a few games of fetch, tug of war or hide-and-seek in a local park will also help a dog to work off a few extra pounds.

Exercise for Cats
Most cats really enjoy playing with their owner. Indeed, it is in a cat’s nature to chase things around at speed so owners really should encourage this, especially if their feline is a little on the large side. Cat play doesn’t have to last for a long time – indeed even 10 to 15 minutes a day can make a big difference to a cat’s long-term well-being.

Pet owners are responsible for making sure their cats and dogs get enough exercise each day to help keep them at a healthy weight. Whilst this may not always be easy, convenient or fun to do; it is a necessary provision of the responsibility they accepted when they first decided to bring them into their home.
