What To Expect From Your Colonic Irrigation Appointment

What To Expect From Your Colonic Irrigation Appointment

Colonic irrigation – it’s a term that can be a little uncomfortable to talk about but for those who understand the benefits of a hydrotherapy session for your colon, finding much-needed information is crucial. That’s where we come in. Whether you’ve already booked your colonic and want to know more about what to expect, or you’ve been considering calling up your local clinic but aren’t sure if it’s for you, we’ve compiled a simple guide for what to expect from your irrigation appointment.

How Do I Prepare Before The Appointment?

There is no set preparation before an appointment, but generally, you will have the chance to meet your practitioner and you’ll be advised to eat a light meal before the treatment, giving yourself enough time to digest before the treatment. You’re also advised to hydrate, so make sure you drink plenty of water and avoid excessive amounts of sugar, and coffee, alcohol or carbonated drinks.

What Will Happen?

Your comfort is the sole focus of countless clinicians who conduct or help with this procedure. You will be given the choice between conducting the procedure yourself with their help, but they are also trained to assist you throughout if that is what you would prefer. Either way, the therapist on hand will explain the system to you on arrival and help you with setting everything up. Once you reach the point of being ready to start, you can either decide to have them stay to monitor as you insert the speculum, or you can request privacy and they will leave.

In some cases, you will have control over the system but in most, the therapist will return once you are set up and covered with a sheet to get the flow of water going. From here, you will remain laid out for around 45 minutes to an hour while the water flows through. You are generally advised to spend around two hours or so at an appointment to give yourself time to prepare, go through the procedure and be able to complete the final evacuation without the pressure of time.

How Many Sessions Will I Need?

While you never need a colonic hydrotherapy treatment, the number of sessions you might need to get the full effect of the treatments will vary from person to person. For some, one session is more than enough while for others, three or more sessions may be required. Consult with your therapist to see what they advise and listen to your body.

What Can I Expect After The Appointment?

Colonic irrigation is non-invasive and generally doesn’t require any downtime. You may need the toilet a few times throughout the day to fully clear the water, but this is often dealt with before you leave the clinic and won’t bother you throughout your usual routine. You’ll need to make sure that you eat a good meal, though this is advised to be light in most cases and that you drink plenty of water to keep your body hydrated and healthy.

Colonic irrigation may be an odd topic to discuss, but going through a cleanse and ridding your body of toxins can leave you feeling energised, fresh and much better in and of yourself. Hopefully, this guide has helped prepare you for your appointment or make the decision for yourself.
