Renting a luxury car may seem like a simple enough process – it probably feels like it should be much the same as standard car hire. But it’s anything but straightforward. The scale of financial liability, amount of paperwork, and weight of the contract terms is in an altogether different world. These are the five mistakes that still catch people out. Underestimating the security deposit and excess
This is the first point at which your bill can mushroom. The security deposit on a luxury or exotic isn’t the £200 hold you’re used to seeing on a compact rental. Security deposits for high-end vehicles typically range from £1,500 to £5,000 depending on the car’s market value (IBISWorld), and that amount gets placed as a hold on your credit card the moment you collect the keys.
If you’re travelling, that hold can effectively freeze a significant chunk of your available credit for the entire rental period. Plan for it. Check your card’s available limit before you book, not on the day of collection.
Beyond the deposit, check what the insurance excess actually is. A Collision Damage Waiver reduces your liability, but many luxury rental CDWs still carry an excess of several thousand pounds. Excess insurance – purchased separately – can reduce that figure to zero or close to it. That policy costs a fraction of what one scraped alloy wheel would.
Skipping a Proper Pre-rental Inspection
Most people inspect the rental car perfunctorily. A walk around, yes, yes, a nod at the agent, a squiggle on the form and you’re on your merry way. Probably fine on a budget rental. Potentially disaster on a supercar or prestige vehicle, and you’re going to get hit where it hurts. In the wallet.
High-end cosmetic repairs are seriously expensive. Costings of thousands for a scratch on a carbon fibre panel or a kerbed rim on one of those unique, beautiful wheels aren’t uncommon, and that’s just for the part. Labour is on top. If the existing damage is something you missed when the car was handed over to you without you capturing it on your video inspection, it quickly becomes your problem.
Before you even start the car for the first time, pull out your phone and record a hi-def video of the entire exterior of the car. Every panel, every wheel, every corner. Do the same inside, scanning details at low level. Make sure any existing damage or marks are recorded in close-up and that the time/date is on. Email it to yourself so it’s a file that’s officially dated. Any reputable outfit will have no problem with this, and it helps both parties.
Ignoring Mileage Caps and Fuel Requirements
Luxury car rental usually doesn’t include unlimited mileage. Daily allowances change with the company and vehicle class, and you will pay a lot for going over. If you are planning a longer trip or a scenic drive, remember to ask about the mileage terms beforehand – not after you’ve already arranged the booking.
Fuel is a different hidden cost issue. Those high-performance engines are designed to run well on premium unleaded fuel with an octane rating of 98, for example. Pouring standard unleaded fuel into the tank of a supercar is not only frowned upon in the rental conditions, but it can also lead to actual engine damage. The penalties imposed are often substantial, with some businesses billing you as part of a mechanical damage claim rather than a simple rule breach. Read the fine print of the fuel policy: some companies operate on a full-to-full basis, others on a like-for-like basis, and a few charge you for a full tank upfront regardless. Know which one you’re agreeing to.
Not Sorting Your Documentation In Advance
Regular car hire will take a glance at your licence and then check a card. Luxury rental houses need a lot more detail. Many would need several address proofs from a variety of recent utility bills, a driving background free of any major endorsements, and age evidence (often at least 25, sometimes 30 for higher-performance cars), as well as a short vetting call or maybe a face-to-face meeting before accepting the reservation.
None of this can be left until the morning before the car is needed. Schedule a wedding transfer, a corporate hire, or a track day rental and the approval must be completed long beforehand. Some companies take a few days to get there.

A two-seater sports car might seem like the perfect way to mark a wedding anniversary – until it comes to cramming suitcases into the cabin for a dash to the airport.
The first thing, then, is to properly consider your intended route and purpose for the car. If what you need is presence and comfort rather than ultimate performance, a luxury saloon or SUV might in fact be a better choice than a high-performance coupe. If it’s the joy of piloting the machine that you’re after, you must then ask yourself if you have access to the right sort of roads in which to do just that.
